If you’ve ever tried to dance along to your favorite group’s live performances or music videos, you’ll know how complicated K-pop choreography can be.

Groups spend hours, days, and months just practicing and memorizing enough dance moves to fill up a 3-minute song. It even seems like some groups spend more time practicing dancing than practicing singing (cough cough). In this post I’m going to talk about one of the most unique choreography works found in a K-pop music video ever. Before you rally with your pitchforks and try to burn me at the stake for not choosing your favorite dance routine, let me say that there are just way too many amazing music videos out there for me to satisfy any large group of people. No matter which I choose, some people will definitely disagree. To make things easier for myself, I limited my search to videos/songs released within the last 10 years.

After hours and hours of extensive research, I’ve decided on Shinee’s “Sherlock (Clue + Note)”. Shinee, already known for its clockwork choreography and tight visual-vocal harmony, took it up another level when they released this song and the music video. In some ways, the music video doesn’t do the members’ dance justice. You really have to see the dance practice videos to really see how well all the members vibe together. There is no weak link; all the members star in the music video as they all show their inner groove. If you watch the music video, you’ll notice how well Shinee uses the “wave”. This isn’t the simple “arms connected” wave, however. Shinee does full body waves where each member does a different pose as the wave moves. They jump over each other, they jump to one side of the screen, then they jump some more.

Few groups are this active, energized, and charismatic all at the same time in their music videos. BTS is a group that comes to mind. Their song “Dope”, released recently, has a sick music video with probably the best K-pop choreography of 2015. The creativity and charisma in that video is just overflowing. Make sure to watch Shinee’s “Sherlock (Clue + Note)” again and also “Dope” if you’re feeling like the dancing vibe. There is nothing like a good music video to make you jump out of your couch, chair, and burn all those calories.
